How to Quit Gambling

Gambling can be fun but not when it starts to interfere with your budget. If you are hiding the amount of time you spend gambling or the amount of money you spend on it them you likely have a problem that needs to be addressed.

Gambling can be addictive but there are some ways you can help quit the habit. The first step is admitting that you do have a problem with it. You will need to be willing to discuss it with your spouse, your family, your friends, and counselors. The more people around you know about what you are dealing with the more of a support system they can offer you.

It is virtually impossible for someone with a gambling habit to go from that to being an occasional gambler. The best way to quit gambling is to remove the possibilities for it. You need money to be able to gamble in casinos and online. A person with a gambling problem needs to have all access to money removed. This may seem extreme but it is necessary.

This includes relinquishing the checkbook and all credit cards. Your spouse needs to take over control of the expenses for at least the first six months. Some gamblers move on at this point to selling their items for money to gamble so be prepared for others to continually be taking an inventory of what items you own. This includes jewelry, electronics, and vehicles.

You need to be prepared that your friends and family members aren’t going to be willing to lend you money for any reason at all. Should a legitimate expense come up that you need assistance with they may be willing to do so only if they pay for it in person rather than giving you the money.

You will need ongoing support to help you quit gambling. It is helpful to get yourself into a gambling support group. In addition to the support of your family and friends you will have the support of other people who are struggling with what you are dealing with yourself. You can find strength with such a support group and you won’t feel so isolated with your feelings.
